Some Astrologers, who probably find Platonic philosophy attractive, see reality consisting in a manifestation of “original ideas”, archetypes materializing themselves in the world in unlimited ways. Sometimes I like to imagine these original ideas as an object located between two mirrors, whose reflections give rise to repeated visualized images, which appear to be filtered by the mirror reflecting the original object/idea.
By observing reality we can notice that each person is fundamentally different and unique, but when we say the word “person”, we recall an idea of what constitutes a person that is shared and universal, and is manifest in various forms, existing somewhere on some level in an original form.

Astrologers and people working with intuition make use of this thinking the other way round in a conscious and sometimes unconscious way. Dreams, Tarots and Astrology utilize universal symbols which are the pivotal points between multiple realities and their manifestation; these symbols are like words whose sometimes magic task is to invoke the universality of our individual experiences. This way of thinking in “parallel” functions in this way: it basically links objects which, although appearing to have little in common, can be compared because they share a symbolic identity, a common purpose. So just to give you an example, the symbol of Venus gives rise to certain sets of myths and images such as that of the Goddess of beauty or a certain aspect of the feminine which is considered passive and receptive and that has the ability to attract something.
The same symbol of Venus is associated with copper, because of its malleability and high conductive capacity, or to flowers because of their capacity to attract and be the recipient of a new seed and new life.
These correlations are not utilized just within esoteric circles, they also are ways of expressing concepts utilized in our every day language; for example, just think of the reason why an electrician can distinguish a plug from another one through the use of words such as “male” and “female” – this is an example based on Italian – we say plug and socket -I’ve not heard of this in English and I did theatre lighting. There are also cosmic patterns and universal structures that are repeated everywhere. You just have to think of the way crystals are produced for example; they are in fact compositions consisting of minerals paired and repeated according to a systematic and harmonic pattern.
Each living organism is a system with a highly sophisticated balance, consisting of a structure containing other substructures. Every organ has a particular function in order to survive. This system, as I have already mentioned in a different way, has a sort of hierarchy, a way in which it is structured. It is found in a symbolic way everywhere, from atomic particles and molecular compositions up to the macrocosmic system such as the solar system.
So the human body can be symbolically represented by an external reality to which it is structurally parallel, such as the solar system for example. With this way of thinking in parallel, the Sun then becomes the heart because it is at the centre of the organism’s life and just as the sun dispenses solar energy it dispenses blood around the body.
Jupiter then represents the principle of assimilation and it is associated to certain digestive functions which have to do with the growth of the individual. Jupiter is associated to intuition because it represents the ability to see correlations among things which have apparently nothing in common. Physically, it is associated to those parts of the body such as the joints, which keep the organism as a whole together.
Mars, symbolized by the God of war, is associated to aggression and the need to defend oneself from threatening circumstances, in the same way that antibodies defend us from external parasites and so on. From this perspective the zodiac is not then seen as a living reality of its own. The sky in fact does not contain a bull or a winged god who exerts magical power over people; the zodiac is the projection of cultural symbols within space and time, the sky is a mirror for these acausal correlations.
